Living Proof – State Champs

Preparing to rock on the final full cross country run of Vans Warped Tour in the coming weeks, New York rockers, State Champs, have released their third studio album, Living Proof. Since initial critiques of the first singles released off the album, the band, affectionately know as Champs, have hit the ground running. Living Proof shows promising signs of hits and freeing the band of the generic pop punk label they have established with previous releases.

The new album kicks off with “Criminal” which is reminiscent of their older albums and was co-written by All Time Low’s Alex Gaskarth. The song is carried by lead singer Derek DiScanio’s familiar and powerful vocals. With potential to be a big hit for the band, “Criminal” is followed by “Frozen”, a song that opens up with a guitar riff that you’ll find stuck in your head for days. Accompanying the infectious guitar comes lyrics such as “With everything that’s burning up inside me,”/ “here’s something for your diary.” Which have will listeners screaming the lyrics along with the track.

The record carries on with two of the lead singles, “Crystal Ball” and “Dead and Gone” which push the boundaries of previously releases by the Champs. Both songs show growth for the band but have a sense of familiarity.

“Our Time to Go” is the rock ballad of the album, which has a become a staple of State Champs’ album since ATWAB.

“The Fix Up”, another song co-written by Gaskarth, provides a change of pace from the other rock songs on the album including lyrics like “Don’t bother at all, it’s all drifting away,”/ “With the way the way we used to be.”

The album closes up with another single “Mine is Gold” and “Time Machine” which features and was co-written by Blink-182’s Mark Hoppus. The song brings a State Champs spin on a song that resembles the post Tom Delong Blink-182.

Living Proof proves growth for State Champs hold promise to shoot the band onto bigger and better things in the future.
